We had a bit of a lie in for us! Didnt get up until gone 9 and had our breakfast looking at the fantastic view. We left Valfrejus and travelled down the windy road back to Mondane to go to the Intermarche we had seen on the way through yesterday before going through the tunnel to Italy. There was a fort up on the hill so we decided to see if we could get to it but instead found two more forts and the lovely skiing village of Aussois. We drove past a huge buzzard trying to eat something at the side of the road and I got a really good look at him – I was thrilled. We walked round both of the forts and saw more buzzards circling high above us and calling to each other. Drove to the village which is set in beautiful pasture with ski lifts going up to the huge mountains. We realised that one of the mountains – the roc noir is one we see from the other side when we ski at Peisey! The village was a mixture of old, quaint with cows under some of the houses and tasteful modern ski chalets. In the town square they had a big fountain of drinkable water so we filled the vans tanks and our bottles – brilliant timing! We set off up the mountain mainly because there was a road going up! And came to two massive dams and reservoirs (that lovely weird not really very real looking jade green water) which were the start of the National Vanoire Park (where we have had a horse drawn sleigh ride and meal in front of fire in a restaurant just down from Peisey Nancroix – the park covers both sides of the mountain!) The road was really steep and quite scary – luckily we didn’t meet anything coming down the other way! We had lunch on a parking place overlooking the spooky green reservoir and out over the fantastic mountains the other side (La Norma ski resort?). We had bought a rotisserie chicken which was very lovely:) Drove up to the huge damn wall and parked, got the walking boots on and set off on a hike around lac Plan d’Amont. It was wonderful, just like proper mountain hiking! Fantastic waterfall, shiny, glittery slate style rocks. On up the path towards the big waterfall and..............I spied two Marmottes! We got soooooo close to them you could have stroked one!!!!!!!!!! He gave us a fantastic show and the other one mooched round the outside area. They are so pretty, cream and brown fur and a face like a giant squirrell. They have a little dark brown tail too which they use to wave about and balance. We had to tear ourselves away but we couldn’t see him and thought we would give the people coming up behind us a chance to have a look. We have seen hardly any people at all but there was a family a little behind us on the walk as far as the waterfall. We sat at the big waterfall for a while and ate some biscuits and I I took lots of water photos. Then up, up and up on scrambly rocky ground and yet more Marmottes – we saw 13 in all today:):) We walked up to a refuge but it was all locked up which seems a bit silly then started to walk down – some of the terrain quite steep and hard to climb down (we took a short cut path being the main reason for this!). Back to the damn – 4 ½ hours of loveliness! Drove back to our lunchtime parking place for a pick about tea and stayed here the night.
